Marcus – Marzo 2023

Hello everyone,

Today I would like to write a short overview of my ESC project in Terrassa, from the perspective of a German. My sending organization placed me in Terrassa and shortly afterwards I received confirmation that I could be here. I met all the other new volunteers online and was provided with plenty of information.

I booked my flight and off I went!

Completely smooth for me!

We now live in a shared flat and get to know each other better every day. The most exciting thing for me is getting to know the many different cultures of my fellow volunteers. Besides the many joyful moments, this is a kind of education that you can’t find anywhere else. I think I’m very lucky here to have found people who, despite different customs and traditions and habits, tick similarly to me.

A day in my life:

Getting up, the most difficult part of the day! Most of the time it works out around 10 o’clock. Because I work in the afternoon. After breakfast and a few conversations with the others, I go to the gym for sports. Then shopping and doing everyday things and getting ready for work. At around 3.20 pm, Lena, who works with me at “Fupar”, and I leave. At work, something new awaits us every day, because we work with disabled people and organise and supervise leisure activities. From football, table tennis, basketball, squatting to handicrafts or Zumba, everything is possible. Our day ends around 7 pm. We go home and let the day come to an end.

Activities:

Besides the daily life, La Víbria, my coordinating organization here, organizes many small events that you can participate in for free. For example, there are small parties called “InterCOOLtural Meetings”. Here some representatives present their own country with a small powerpoint, food, dance and music. Or the Greenfluencers, who organize small events about nature conservation. So we were in Terrassa and had a clean-up.

Furthermore, Terrassa is geographically predestined to visit Barcelona. Besides the tourist attractions like Sagrada Familia Parque Güell and so on, my personal favourite place so far is the “castell de montjuïc”. You can reach the castle by zip line, by car or on foot and from there you have one of the most beautiful views over the whole of Barcelona.

So for me it was a nice place to just switch off and enjoy the scenery. Unfortunately, I can’t say what it’s like in the high season, but I was told quite often that Barcelona will be incredibly crowded, so if you want to have some peace and quiet, I recommend exploring Barcelona and “castell de montjuïc” in the low season.

So overall there is so much to do and so much to explore and I am really looking forward to the next weeks here!

Bye 🙂
