Hola!
Em dic Noelle, tinc 24 anys i sóc d’Irlanda. Fa uns mesos que estic vivint i fent voluntariat a Terrassa i aquesta experiència m’ha obert els ulls i és inestimable en molts aspectes. A diferència de molts voluntaris que només acabar l’educació obligatòria realitzen el voluntariat com a primer tast d’independència, els meus motius per emprendre un projecte de voluntariat eren molt diferents. Després d’un parell d’anys personals difícils i de la meva sobtada sortida de la formació esportiva professional, als 23 anys, em vaig trobar en una cruïlla de camins. Continuar com era, o esforçar-me per alguna cosa més. Un cop vaig trobar aquest projecte ESC, em va imposar la part tossuda i competitiva. Vaig aprofitar l’oportunitat!

Haver d’arrelar la teva vida a un país on no parles l’idioma no és per als dèbils de cor. Segueixen setmanes difícils de confusió, adaptant-se a nous horaris, cultures i persones. Afortunadament, el treball de voluntariat a La Fact Fupar m’ha mantingut motivada des del primer dia. Em feia il·lusió poder fer esports i altres activitats recreatives amb persones amb discapacitat, ja que no sóc aliena als esports per a persones amb discapacitat. Al no tenir experiència amb la llengua espanyola, estava nerviosa de no poder complir amb les meves obligacions com a voluntària i marcar la diferència amb la meva feina. Vaig aprendre ràpidament que el nostre impuls, accions i intencions són molt més importants. En poques setmanes em feia tacles lliscants al futbol, ​​esquivant pals d’hoquei i fent la Macarena sense parar. Et reben cada dia amb els braços oberts i veure com els seus ulls s’il·luminen d’emoció quan arribes a la feina em va demostrar que estava marcant la diferència en les seves vides i que vaig prendre la decisió correcta. Va reactivar el meu amor i passió per l’esport per la qual estic molt i molt agraïda.

Adaptar-se per viure un estil de vida espanyol amb altres voluntaris d’arreu del món és un altre dels aspectes destacats d’un projecte ESC. Els meus companys de la Creu Gran, que ara estic orgullosa d’anomenar amics propers, emeten positivitat, acceptació i ànims a cada racó del nostre estimat pis. Els meus companys voluntaris de Fupar, per ser la barreja perfecta entre edificant, solidari i professional. Un agraïment a tots els altres per compartir les seves històries úniques i actituds positives mentre naveguem junts per aquesta oportunitat única a la vida. Agraeixo les petites coses que em fan feliç i em fan fonament el dia a dia. Ric fins que em fa mal la panxa i ballo durant hores i hores. Al voltant de cada racó assolellat m’espera una nova experiència i un repte. Sempre hi ha alguna cosa emocionant per descobrir i estic fent nous records que duraran tota la vida.

Així que si esteu asseguts allà i us pregunteu “Per què hauria de fer un projecte de voluntariat?” La meva resposta és senzilla. Perquè no?!. No tens res a perdre i un món d’experiències per guanyar. En poques setmanes he passat d’estar insegura i nerviosa pel que m’esperava, a estar emocionada amb aquest proper capítol de la meva vida i només és el començament!. He après a no deixar que els petits obstacles de la vida t’impedeixin fer alguna cosa que t’apassiona. Les recompenses valdran la pena del risc. Així que, vés-hi!

Hi!

My name is Noelle and I am 24 years old from Ireland. I have been living and volunteering in Terrassa for the past few months and this experience has been eye-opening and invaluable in many ways. Unlike many volunteers fresh out of their secondary education and this is their first taste of independence, my reasons for undertaking a volunteering project were quite different. After a couple of difficult personal years and my sudden departure from my background in professional sport, at the ripe old age of 23, I found myself at a crossroads. Continue as I was, or strive for something more. Once I found this ESC project, the stubborn and competitive side of me prevailed. I took a chance and seized the opportunity. 

Having to uproot your life to a country where you don’t speak the language is not for the faint of heart. Difficult weeks of confusion follow, adapting to new schedules, cultures and people. Thankfully the volunteering work in La Fact Fupar has kept me motivated from day one. I was excited to be doing sports and other recreational activities with people with disabilities as I am no stranger to disability sports. Having no experience with the Spanish language I was nervous that I would not be able to fulfil my duties as a volunteer and make a difference with my work. I learned quickly that your drive, actions and intentions are far more important. Within weeks I was getting sliding tackles in soccer, dodging hockey sticks and doing the Macarena endlessly. You are greeted with open arms daily and seeing their eyes light up in excitement when you arrive at work showed me that I was making a difference in their lives and that I made the right decision. It reignited my love and passion for sport for which I am grateful and very thankful.

Adapting to live a Spanish lifestyle with other volunteers from across the globe is another major highlight of an ESC project. My fellow Creu Gran housemates, which I am now proud to call close friends, emit positivity, acceptance and encouragement into every corner of our beloved apartment. My fellow Fupar volunteers, for being the perfect mixture of uplifting, caring and professional. A thank you to everyone else for sharing their unique stories and positive attitudes as we navigate this once in a lifetime opportunity together. I appreciate the little things that keep me happy and grounded day to day. I laugh until my stomach hurts and dance for hours on end.  Around every sunny corner there is a new experience and challenge waiting for me. There is always something exciting to discover and I am making new memories that will last a lifetime. 

So if you are sitting there wondering “Why should I do a volunteering project?” My answer is simple. Why not?!. You have nothing to lose and a world of experiences to gain. In a short few weeks I have gone from being unsure and nervous about what lies ahead, to being excited about this next chapter of my life and it’s only the beginning!. I have learned to not let the small hurdles in life stop you from doing something that you are truly passionate about. The rewards will be worth the risk. So, go for it!
