Sóc en Sebastiano, un noi de 18 anys del nord d’Itàlia 🇮🇹 que fa tres setmanes que viu a Terrassa.

Hello everyone,

I’m Sebastiano, an 18 years old guy from the northern part of Italy 🇮🇹 that has been living in Terrassa for the past three weeks.

Actualment estic fent voluntariat, juntament amb uns altres voluntaris, a Prodis, una associació local que acull més de 400 nois i noies afectats per diferents tipus de discapacitats mentals i/o físiques.

La nostra feina aquí consisteix a donar suport a petits grups de persones durant les seves activitats diàries i, almenys durant les primeres setmanes, intentar establir algun tipus de relació de confiança amb elles. Treballem, juguem i mengem amb ells però, el més important, intentem parlar tant com podem.

El nostre coneixement de l’espanyol, després de tres setmanes, ens permet tenir converses curtes i fàcils, que normalment acaben amb una sèrie de malentesos, però seguiré pensant que la pràctica fa el mestre 😉

Els meus moments preferits són els entrenaments durant la setmana (bàsquet i futbol) perquè, creieu-me quan dic que aquestes persones hi posen molt d’esforç i passió per millorar en l’esport que els agrada i, darrer però no menys important, realment saben jugar. Els caps de setmana, en canvi, solem tenir els partits contra els equips de les diferents associacions.

I’m currently volunteering, with a couple of other volunteers, in Prodis, a local association that hosts over 400 chicos and chicas affected by different types of mental and/or physical disabilities.

Our job here consists in supporting small groups of people throughout their daily activities and, at least in the first weeks, trying to build some kind of trustful relationship with them. We work, play and eat with them but, most importantly, we try to talk as much as we can.

Our three-week spanish knowledge mostly allows us to have easy short conversations that usually end in a sequence of misunderstandings but I’ll keep thinking that practice makes perfect 😉

My favourite moments are the trainings during the week (basketball and football) cause, trust me when I say that, these people put a lot of effort and passion trying to get better at the sport they like and, last but not least, they really can play. On the weekends instead we usually have the matches against the different association’s teams.

Les meves matins d’octubre les passo preparant el que anomenem “Tunel del terror”: una casa del terror amb la temàtica de Motel que estem decorant completament per Halloween i que estarà oberta al públic els últims dies del mes.

Aquest tipus d’activitats són utilitzades habitualment per Prodis per presentar el seu món als ciutadans de Terrassa, un món que, malauradament, sovint es deixa de banda.

En la meva opinió, estan fent una gran feina: mai havia vist tantes persones inclusives i comprensives al voltant d’una ciutat com he vist aquí, on les associacions culturals i socials tenen un paper realment central en la vida i les activitats de la ciutat. Cada persona amb qui treballo té una vida molt més plena que qualsevol altra persona de la seva edat que no estigui diagnosticada amb “discapacitats” i trobo que és tan bonic com trist al mateix temps.

Just ahir, la meva cap em va preguntar si coneixia alguna associació local, com la que ella dirigeix, al meu poble i no vaig poder contestar més que “no, no en conec cap” perquè realment no n’hi ha. Hi estic pensant des de llavors.

El pla inicial, des que vaig rebre el meu diploma fa uns tres mesos, era venir aquí per entendre si una feina semblant a la que estic fent podria haver estat la meva durant els propers trenta o quaranta anys a casa meva, però només després d’aquestes tres setmanes ja no sé si aprecio tant Itàlia. La vida espanyola i la gent d’aquí em tenen fascinat.

My October mornings are currently spent preparing the so-called “Tunel del terror”: a Motel themed house of horror that we are fully decorating on the occasion of halloween and that’ll be open to the public on the last days of the month.

This type of activities are commonly used by Prodis for introducing the Terrassa citizens to its world that is unfortunately sometimes left aside.

In my opinion they are doing a great job: I’ve never seen so many inclusive and understanding people around a city like I’ve seen here where cultural and social associations truly have a central role in the city life and activities. Every guy I work with is having such a fuller life than any other person his or her age that is not diagnosed with “disabilities” and I find it so beautiful and sad at the same time.

Just yesterday I was asked by my boss if I knew any local association, like the one she is ruling, in my hometown and I couldn’t answer anything but “no, I don’t” cause there’s really none. I’ve been thinking about it since then.

Initial plan, since I received my diploma around three months ago, was to come here to understand if a job similar to the one I’m doing could have been mine for the next thirty to forty years, back at my place, but just after these three weeks I’m not sure I appreciate Italy that much anymore. Spanish life and Spanish people are hitting hard.
