I am Paula, 18 years old and I come from Austria 🇦🇹.

Vaig començar el meu projecte ESC a Terrassa fa aproximadament dos mesos i mig i deixeu-me dir-vos que el temps passa volant aquí.

Aquest any vaig acabar l’escola, vaig treure el carnet de conduir, vaig treballar durant l’estiu i, de sobte, em vaig trobar estirada al sofà sense cap pla, sense saber què fer amb la meva vida. Poc després de la meva graduació no volia anar a la universitat immediatament, però què més hi ha a fer? Sortosament, la meva germana em va presentar la idea de fer voluntariat a un altre país. Fa uns deu anys va passar un any a Dinamarca fent voluntariat en una fleca i un centre de jardineria, treballant amb persones amb discapacitat mental. Parlant d’això avui dia, encara li agrada pensar en aquest temps com un dels millors de la seva vida.

Així que ho vaig provar. Vaig sol·licitar diversos projectes i vaig escollir La Víbria, ja que em semblava el més adequat per a mi. He estudiat castellà a l’escola durant sis anys i, com que m’interessa força la llengua, el meu objectiu era millorar-la i utilitzar-la de manera regular també.

I started my ESC project in Terrassa approximately two and a half months ago and let me tell you, time flies fast here.

This year I graduated from school, did my drivers license, worked during the summer and all of a sudden, I found myself lying on the couch with no plan, what to do with my life. Shorty after my graduation I didn’t want to go to university immediately, but what else is there to do? Luckily my sister introduced me to this idea of volunteering in a different country. About ten years ago she spent one year in Denmark volunteering in a bakery and a garden center alongside people with mental disabilities. Talking about it nowadays, she still likes to think of this time as one of the best in her life.

So, I gave it a shot. I applied for different projects and chose la Víbria as it seemed to be the most suitable for me. I’ve had Spanish in school for six years and since I am quite interested in the language itself, my goal was to improve it and using it on a regular basis as well.

Així és com vaig arribar a Terrassa amb altres dotze voluntaris de diversos països. Amb ells, aquests últims dos mesos han estat plens de moltes rialles i alegria. Planificant coses, sortint, cuinant junts, mirant pel·lícules, fent excursions i participant en tot tipus d’esdeveniments a Terrassa són només algunes de les moltes activitats que estem gaudint junts. A banda d’això, m’encanta anar a Barcelona, agafar un cafè i passejar per la ciutat amb els meus amics. Però Terrassa també és una ciutat preciosa. El primer que em va impressionar aquí van ser les moltes fleques precioses on m’encanta comprar pa o tot tipus de dolços.

This is how I came to Terrassa with twelve other volunteers from several countries. With them, these last two months have been filled with a lot of laughter and joy. Planning things, going out, cooking together, watching movies, hiking and joining all kinds of events in Terrassa are just a few of the many activities we are enjoying together. Other than that, I really enjoy going to Barcelona, grabbing a coffee there and strolling through the city with my friends. But Terrassa is also a beautiful city. The first thing I was mesmerized by here were the many precious bakeries where I love to buy bread or all kinds of sweets.

Amb tres dels altres voluntaris treballo en una organització anomenada LaFact Fupar. La meva feina allà consisteix a acompanyar persones amb discapacitat mental i física a les seves activitats diàries i ajudar-les. El meu horari consta de diverses activitats com jugar a l’hoquei, ballar, jardineria, informàtica, teatre, llegir llibres als nens, etc. El que més m’agrada de la meva feina és que cada dia és diferent i tinc la sensació que estic aprenent constantment coses noves. A més, tenir un lloc de treball on estàs envoltat de gent tot el temps resulta una gran oportunitat per conèixer la cultura espanyola.

With three of the other volunteers I work in an organization called LaFact Fupar. My job there is to accompany people with mental and physical disabilities to their daily activities as well as helping them. My schedule consists of various activities like playing hockey, dancing, gardening, IT, theater, reading books to children, etc… What I like about my work is that every day is different, and I feel like I am constantly learning something new. Additionally, having a workplace where you’re surrounded by people all the time turns out to be a great opportunity to get to know the Spanish culture.

El temps a Terrassa fins ara ha estat increïble i he gaudit de cada segon. Per tant, estic molt emocionada pels propers mesos i també per mostrar a la meva família el lloc i la ciutat on visc quan vinguin a visitar-me.

The time in Terrassa until now has been incredible and I enjoyed every second of it. Therefore I am really excited for the next few months and also showing my family the place and the city I live in when they come to visit me.
