Aquí estem, passant l’últim mes del nostre projecte a Espanya. Fa unes setmanes vam entrar a l’estiu espanyol. Suposo que hi ha una paraula que el descriu força bé: CALOR! Els primers dies realment m’havia d’acostumar a la calor, sobretot perquè ve acompanyada d’aquesta sensació constant de cansament. Ara entenc per què a la gent espanyola li encanta la migdiada. Tot i que els dies a vegades són insuportables, les nits són molt refrescants. Passar temps amb els altres voluntaris, fer diferents tipus d’esport, tocar música, beure, parlar, relaxar-nos… segueix sent una de les meves coses preferides de fer aquí. Ara encara més durant la nit.

Here we are, spending the last month of our project in Spain. A few weeks ago, we’ve entered the Spanish summertime. I guess there’s one word that describes it quite well: HOT! The first days I really had to get used to the heat, especially because it comes along with this constant feeling of tiredness. Now I know why Spanish people love siesta. Whereas the days are sometimes unbearable, the nights are super refreshing. Spending time with the other volunteers, doing different kinds of sport, playing music, drinking, talking, chilling, are still my favorite things to do here. Now even more during the night.

Una cosa que he après amb el temps aquí és que realment importa com comences a parlar amb la gent des del principi. Com que vam tenir l’oportunitat de fer un curs de català durant sis mesos, volia aprofitar la llengua. D’una banda per impressionar la gent (no ho negaré), i d’altra banda per millorar-la cada vegada més. El problema amb això és que, per exemple, a Fupar, l’organització on treballo, vaig començar a parlar amb els monitors en castellà al principi. Després d’haver fet algunes classes de català, volia canviar al català, però com que ja estaven acostumats a sentir-me parlar en castellà, mai em van parlar en català. Per sort, hi ha gent aquí que sempre parla en català, o he conegut altra gent amb qui he intentat parlar-lo des del principi. Al final, estic contenta de tenir les dues llengües integrades en la meva vida quotidiana.

Ara que el nostre projecte s’acaba a poc a poc, estic una mica alleujada de no haver de bregar amb la pressió de “tot el que volia fer durant el temps aquí a Espanya i encara no he fet”. Com potser heu notat al paràgraf anterior, m’interessen molt les llengües, per això he decidit quedar-me aquí a Terrassa i començar els meus estudis de llengües romàniques més endavant aquest any. També em tranquil·litza saber que encara no deixo Terrassa i que hi tornaré després de dos mesos plens de moments amb la meva família i amics al meu poble.

One thing I learned here over time is, it really matters how you started to talk to people here in the beginning. Since we had the opportunity to take a Catalan course for six months, I wanted to make use of the language. On one side to impress the people, not gonna lie, on the other to improve it more and more. The problem with that is, for example, at Fupar, the organization I’m working in, I started to talk to the monitors in Spanish in the beginning. After having had a few Catalan lessons, I wanted to change that into Catalan, but since they were already used to me speaking Spanish, they never spoke Catalan to me. Luckily, there are people here that always speak Catalan, or I got to meet other people and tried to speak it from the beginning. In the end I am now happy to have both languages included in my daily life.

Now that our project is slowly coming to an end, I am kind of glad not having to deal with the pressure of “what I wanted to do during the time here in Spain but still haven’t done”. As you may have realized in the paragraph before, I am super interested in languages, therefore I decided to stay here in Terrassa and start my studies regarding roman languages later this year. It’s also nice to know that I am not leaving Terrassa yet and that I am coming back again after two months full of spending time with my family and friends in my hometown.

Aquest voluntariat ha estat una gran experiència per a mi, i estic agraïda per tots aquests moments tan bonics que he pogut compartir amb tantes persones precioses. Ara tinc moltes ganes d’encetar el pròxim capítol de la meva vida, plena d’il·lusió i curiositat pel que vindrà.

This voluntary has been a great experience for me, and I am grateful for these many beautiful moments I got to spend with many precious people. I am now looking forward to enter the next chapter in my life and I am full of excitement and curiosity about what’s to come.
