Gràcies per sintonitzar aquesta edició final de tu llegint el meu diari.

Només queden 7 dies perquè aquest projecte arribi a la seva fi. Aquests 10 mesos han estat moooolt llargs, però també han passat volant. Han passat moltes coses des de l’última vegada que vaig escriure una entrada al febrer. Després de tornar de les vacances de Nadal, esperava amb ganes l’estiu espanyol. Doncs bé, em vaig endur més del que estava preparat. Després d’un viatge, Terrassa es va posar CALENTA.

Well, Hello there.

Thank you for tuning in for this final edition of you reading my diary.

There are only 7 days left until this project finishes. Those 10 months were loooong yet went flying by. A lot has happened since i last wrote an entry in febuary. After I returned from Christmas vacation I was looking forward to the Spanish summer. Well I got more than I was prepared for. After I returned from a trip Terrassa got HOT.

Tapes i festes i migdiades entremig

 I, naturalment, a mesura que els dies s’allargaven i les nits es tornaven més càlides, començaven a passar moltes més coses. A l’esperit festiu ja existent s’hi van sumar algunes festivitats importants.

Com a estranger, veure un dia assenyalat al calendari i viure l’esdeveniment en directe són dues coses molt diferents. Dies abans de l’esdeveniment, ja es nota l’ambient: tothom en parla, la ciutat es prepara, tot s’està muntant, i quan arriba el dia… tot es descontrola (parlant metafòricament).

Han passat moltes coses i s’han celebrat més esdeveniments. De moment, vull concentrar-me en tres esdeveniments destacats per a mi.

Primer: “Sant Joan”, el 23 de juny de 2025.
És la nit de celebració del solstici d’estiu (que té lloc pocs dies després), i es combina amb la festivitat del naixement de Sant Joan Baptista, fet que la converteix en la celebració especial que coneixem i estimem avui dia. Es podria comparar amb una segona nit de Cap d’Any. Ja dies abans se senten petards, però és al vespre/nit quan la festa comença de veritat. Els carrers s’omplen de gent, i a tots els espais públics i parcs es reuneixen famílies i amics per celebrar amb menjar tradicional, moltes begudes i encara més focs artificials.

Segon: “Festa Major de Terrassa”.
Hauria d’estar en primera posició, però cronològicament és després de Sant Joan. La Festa Major se celebra del divendres 4 de juliol fins al dilluns 8 de juliol. 5 dies d’activitats, esdeveniments i concerts sense parar. Hi participa tota la ciutat.
Dir-ne només “una festa” no fa justícia. És LA festa. Encara que tinguessis tota l’energia del món i no necessitessis dormir, no podries veure-ho tot.

Veus aquelles fotos amb focs artificials?

Això em porta al meu tercer punt: el “Correfoc”.
Els Correfocs són espectaculars. L’energia que irradia un grup a punt d’encendre focs artificials és fascinant. Depenent del grup, els participants porten capes ignífugues mentre corren amb fonts de foc cridant des de les seves forques. Alguns grups treuen grans escultures com dracs verds, mussols gegants i altres criatures mitològiques. No és exactament un esdeveniment “tranquil” ni “amagat”. La llum i el fum dels focs es poden veure i sentir des de lluny. Segueix aquesta guia de llum i soroll, i t’espera un espectacle únic que probablement no oblidaràs.

And naturally as the days got longer and nights got warmer. A lot more things started happening. Adding to the already existing party spirit some major festivities happened.

As a foreigner, to see the day in the calendar and seeing the event live are two very different things. Well. Days before the Event you can find everyone talking about it. The City is being prepared, everything is being set up and when the day arrives, all hell breaks loose (metaphorically speaking).

Well a lot has happened and more events have been celebrated. For now I want to concentrate on 3 major events that stood out to me.

First “Sant Joan” on the 23rd of June 2025. It is the night celebrating the summer solstice (which is only a few days later) and it was combined with the celebration of the birth of St. John the Baptist, making it the special celebration we know and love today. It could be compared to a second new years eve celebration. Even days before you can hear the fireworks. But in the Evening/Night the party really starts. People are everywhere in the streets. In all the public spaces and parks are gatherings of families and friends celebrating with traditional food, lots of drinks and even more fireworks.

Secondly there is “Festa Major Terrassa”. It should be in the first position but chronologically happens after Sant Joan. Festa Major takes place from Friday the 4th of July until Monday the 8th of July. 5 Days of activities, events and concerts back to back. The whole city is participating.

To say it is just “a party” doesn’t do Festa Major justice. It is “THE party”. When you have enough energy and no need for sleep you still would not be able to see everything.

See those pictures with the fireworks?

That is leading me to my third point. The “Correfoc” (eng. “fire-runs”). Correfocs are amazing. The sheer energy radiating from a group that is about to light fireworks is fascinating to see. Depending on the group, the participants wear fire resistant capes while they run around with screaming fountains of fire on their pitchforks. Some groups bring out huge sculptures of green dragons, giant owls and other mythical creatures. It is not exactly a “quiet” nor “hidden” event. The light and smoke from the screeching fireworks can be seen and heard from a good distance. Follow that beacon of activity and you will be presented with a unique show that you probably won’t forget.

El món del voluntariat

No estaria aquí si no hagués començat per algun lloc.
Fem un petit repàs de la meva experiència de voluntariat fins ara. Han estat 1,5 anys turbulents. No era el meu pla recollir totes les “pedres de l’infinit” del voluntariat, però aquí estem.

The world of volunteering

I would not be here if I started somewhere. Lets have a small recap of my volunteering experience so far. It has been a turbulent 1,5 Years. It certainly wasn’t my plan to collect all the volunteering-infinity-stones. But here we are.

Voluntariat en equip “Vol in green 4”

Vaig començar el meu camí en el voluntariat amb un projecte de curta durada als Alps francesos, prop de la frontera amb Itàlia. Ajudàvem agricultors locals amb la construcció i manteniment dels seus hivernacles. Va ser una gran introducció al món de l’ESC (Cos Europeu de Solidaritat).

Team Volunteering “Vol in green 4”

I started my volunteering journey with a short-term volunteering in the french alps, close to the Italian border. We helped local farmers with the construction and maintenance of their greenhouses. That was a great introduction into the world ESC (European Solidarity Corps).

Camp de treball “Beyond the vineyard: the dry stone heritage”

Després vaig decidir fer més voluntariat, per exemple, en un camp de treball a les muntanyes de Catalunya. Va resultar ser una prova de resistència, per veure quant calor d’estiu podíem suportar fent feines manuals pesades. Reparàvem murs de pedra seca i barraques de vinya. Va ser la meva primera introducció a Catalunya. La regió on passaria un any de la meva vida.

Work camp “Beyond the vineyard: the dry stone heritage”

From there I decided to volunteer some more, for example, in a work camp in the mountains of Catalonia. It turned out to be an endurance test, to see how much summer heat we could manage while doing heavy manual labor. We repaired old stone walls and stone huts on the vineyards. That was my first introduction into Catalonia. The region I was going to spend one year of my life in.

Voluntariat de llarga durada a Terrassa

Més tard aquell any vaig començar el meu voluntariat de llarga durada a Terrassa. Treballava a l’oficina, en l’àmbit de la comunicació. També feia (algunes) fotos i vídeos dels esdeveniments. Mentre treballava per La Vibria vaig tenir l’oportunitat de participar en diverses formacions i intercanvis. Alguns moments destacables van ser la formació d’arribada i la de mitja estada.

Long term Volunteering in Terrassa

Later that year I started my long-term volunteering in Terrassa. I had a Job in the Office in the field of communications. I also took (some) pictures and videos of the events. While working for La Vibria I had the opportunity to participate in a number of trainings and exchanges. Some honorable mentions were the on-arrival and mid-term trainings.

Intercanvi juvenil “Babel Jam”

Vaig participar en un intercanvi juvenil a França. Amb un grup de joves vam anar a Rennes per crear videojocs sobre la interculturalitat.

Youth Exchange “Babel Jam”

I got to participate in a youth exchange in France. With a group of youngsters we went to Rennes to create video games about interculturality.

Curs de formació “Vol in green 5”

Un altre curs de formació em va portar de nou al camp francès. Aquest projecte tractava sobre agricultura sostenible, vida ecològica i participació local.

A Training Course took me back to the french countryside. That project was about sustainable agriculture, ecological living and local participation.

Algunes xifres

Uau. 10 mesos és molt temps. Suficient per concebre i tenir un nadó. No és el meu cas, només vull subratllar que és molt temps. Aquí tens algunes dades curioses (segons jo) que vull compartir:

M’he unit a 29 grups de WhatsApp nous, per converses més o menys importants.

He recollit 25 bosses de “Too Good To Go”. Un gran regal per a cada festa. I una bona manera de sobreviure als mesos d’hivern. Xocolata calenta i pastes de forns.

He menjat 75 empanades. No de cop, sinó durant 10 mesos. He gastat 135,00 € en empanades. I ho trobo acceptable.

Some Numbers

Wow. 10 Months is a long time. Enough time to conceive and produce a baby. That didn’t happen in my case, I just want to emphasize that it’s a long time. Here are some interesting Numbers (in my opinion) that I’d like to share.

I joined 29 new Whatsapp Groups for some more, some less important discussions.

I picked up 25 to good to go bags. A great gift for every party. And a good way to be comfortable in the winter months. Hot chocolate and some Goodies from Bakeries.

I ate 75 Empanadas. Not in one sitting but rather over the course of 10 months. For 75 Empanadas I spent 135,00 €. Which is okay.

Com que no tenia bici durant la meva estada, anava a peu a tot arreu. No sóc una persona especialment “en forma”. Faig passejades amb la càmera, buscant coses per fotografiar. Però des que fa tanta calor, les passejades fotogràfiques han quedat a zero.

Since I did not own a bike in my time here, I walked everywhere. I am by no means a “fit” person. I do go on walks with my camera, looking for things to take pictures of. But since the weather has gotten hot my photography walks have been reduced to zero.

Al principi, no sabia què esperar d’aquest voluntariat de llarga durada. Però només participant i estant obert al canvi he pogut gaudir del meu temps aquí.
