Senyores i senyors,

Em dic Melanie Cieslinski, tinc 24 anys i soc una dissenyadora especulativa amb arrels poloneses i alemanyes. Actualment faig voluntariat amb l’equip de comunicació de La Víbria Intercultural a Barcelona. Amb un grau en disseny i un màster en transformació digital, la meva feina se situa a la intersecció entre creativitat, estratègia i impacte social. Ja fa gairebé un any que soc aquí, i aviat arribarà el moment de marxar. Però no me’n vaig sense compartir tot el que ha passat aquests últims mesos, perquè han estat mesos plens de festivals i exposicions!

A l’abril vaig anar al festival OFFF. És un dels festivals de disseny més grans del món (no és una bogeria???), i em feia molta il·lusió veure tants dissenyadors reunits. Hi havia xerrades, tallers, trobades i molt més. Les presentacions van ser increïbles; em van motivar a continuar endavant com a jove dissenyadora i a seguir el meu camí. Però l’experiència més enriquidora va ser conèixer dissenyadors increïbles i compartir moments amb ells.

Aquell mateix cap de setmana, la Load Gallery va acollir AI Art Magazine per a l’esdeveniment de llançament de la seva nova edició. A l’exposició vaig conèixer dos artistes de Taiwan i Corea del Sud, i fins i tot vam anar a fer una passejada inspiradora vora el mar, parlant sobre la vida, la comunitat i l’art.

Un dels moments més emocionants d’aquest any va ser la invitació per ser ponent al rellançament de Speculative Futures Barcelona, una comunitat que reuneix persones curioses pel futur. Per a mi va ser increïble veure com puc inspirar altres persones. Vaig presentar el meu treball de disseny i vaig compartir la meva perspectiva sobre temes actuals relacionats amb els estudis de futur. Aquesta xerrada em va demostrar que la meva feina és vista i valorada. A més, l’experiència va ser tan divertida que em vaig adonar que aquest és un camí que vull seguir: parlar davant de gent, inspirar-los i participar en converses que donen forma al futur i al disseny.

Al juny també vaig organitzar una col·laboració per a una sessió de fotos amb un fotògraf local. Va ser molt divertit i, d’aquesta manera, també vaig poder conèixer un altre creatiu local! Les fotografies han quedat increïbles i estic molt contenta amb el resultat, però la mateixa sessió també va ser molt divertida. Tots dos teníem moltes idees i va ser una experiència de col·laboració fantàstica.

Aquell mateix mes va tenir lloc el festival Sónar a Barcelona, i he de dir que va ser absolutament increïble! Vaig passar els dies entre conferències i exposicions, connectant amb una comunitat inspiradora d’artistes i dissenyadors d’arreu del món. Les exposicions combinaven art i innovació, mostrant instal·lacions tecnològiques interactives. Mentrestant, les conferències abordaven temes contemporanis, aprofundint en l’evolució de la cultura d’internet i les tecnologies emergents. Sens dubte, un dels punts culminants per a mi va ser assistir a la brillant conferència de Mindy Seu.

Ladies and gentlemen, 

My name is Melanie Cieslinski, a 24-year-old speculative designer with a Polish-German background. I’m currently volunteering with La Víbria Intercultural’s communication team in Barcelona. With a bachelor’s degree in design and a master’s in digital transformation, my work sits at the intersection of creativity, strategy, and social impact. I have already been here for almost a year, and soon it will be time for me to leave. But I’m not leaving without sharing what has been happening over the last few months, because it has been months full of festivals and exhibitions!

In April, I went to the OFFF Festival. It’s one of the biggest design festivals in the world (isn’t that crazy???), and I was super excited to see so many designers coming together. There were talks, workshops, meetings, and so much more. The presentations were amazing; they motivated me to keep going as a young designer and to follow my path. But the most enriching experience was meeting incredible designers and sharing moments with them.

That same weekend, Load Gallery hosted the AI Art Magazine for the launch event of their newest edition. At the exhibition, I met two artists from Taiwan and South Korea, and we actually went for an inspiring walk by the ocean, talking about life, community, and art.

One of the most exciting moments of this year was my invitation to be a speaker at the relaunch of Speculative Futures Barcelona, a community that brings together people who are curious about the future. For me, it was amazing to see how I can inspire people. I presented my design work and shared my perspective on current topics in futures work. This talk really showed that my work is seen and appreciated. Also, this experience was so much fun that I realized this is a path I want to pursue: speaking in front of people, inspiring them, and engaging in conversations that shape futures & design.

In June, I also organized a photoshoot collaboration with a local photographer. It was really fun, and this way I also got to know another local creative! The pictures look amazing and I am really happy with the outcome, but the photoshoot itself was also incredibly fun. We both had so many ideas, and it was an amazing collaborative experience.

That same month, Sónar Festival took place in Barcelona, and I have to say, it was absolutely incredible! I spent my days in conferences and exhibitions, connecting with an inspiring community of fellow artists and designers from all around the globe. The exhibitions combined art and innovation, showing interactive tech installations. Meanwhile, the conferences addressed contemporary themes, diving into the evolution of internet culture and emerging technologies. A definitive highlight for me was attending Mindy Seu’s brilliant lecture.

En el meu últim article, a l’abril, vaig parlar de la meva visita a una granja prop de Mataró. Estava fent recerca per al meu propi projecte personal, i ara finalment l’he pogut acabar! Com que tinc formació en estudis de futur, volia utilitzar aquests coneixements i connectar-los amb la gent local de Terrassa. He estat treballant en una versió futura dels calçots (una varietat local de ceba tendra que es cull a la primavera i es fa a la brasa. És una tradició que obsessiona els catalans, i entenc perfectament per què, perquè són boníssims…). Durant la meva recerca vaig descobrir que, a causa del canvi climàtic, serà més difícil cultivar-los en el futur. El que vaig aprendre a la granja és que les condicions més perilloses que vindran seran els hiverns suaus i els cicles imprevisibles de pluja i sol que canvien molt ràpidament. Això fa que el cultiu sigui molt vulnerable a malalties i plagues.

Així doncs, el meu projecte consisteix en una història que presento en format fanzín. Està ambientada l’any 2046, quan l’agricultura tradicional s’hibrida en una flora hiperresistent, i la calçotada evoluciona cap a un nou tipus de banquet. La meva obra navega entre emocions complexes, alternant entre l’amargor de plorar un paradís perdut i l’alegria d’una comunitat que prospera fins i tot en una realitat més dura. Vull inspirar la gent local a reflexionar sobre els seus hàbits actuals i imaginar activament com volen que sigui aquest lloc en el futur. Perquè el canvi climàtic ja és inevitable, i hem de trobar maneres d’adaptar-nos i viure de la manera més sostenible possible.

Vaig presentar aquest projecte a la Fira del Medi Ambient de Terrassa, i he de dir que va ser molt divertit! Vaig conèixer molta gent interessant i tothom estava molt entusiasmat amb el meu projecte. És evident que la gent s’interessa més pel futur quan els afecta directament, cosa que vaig aconseguir connectant el disseny especulatiu amb les tradicions locals. Moltes persones tenien ganes de llegir la història, així que la vam publicar al web de La Víbria: aneu-hi a fer-hi un cop d’ull!

Ara que em queda un mes abans de marxar i començo a acomiadar-me, estic començant a reflexionar sobre tot el que he après aquest any. Per a mi era important créixer com a dissenyadora, i crec que ho he aconseguit. He après coses que ni tan sols havia imaginat abans. També he après què significa realment dissenyar d’una manera centrada en les persones gràcies a la meva feina a La Víbria. És increïble veure l’impacte que pot tenir la teva feina quan dissenyes per a les persones i per a una bona causa. El networking és una cosa que definitivament he millorat i gaudit; he après a exposar-me i a connectar realment amb la gent més enllà de la superfície. Durant el meu temps lliure aquí, també he treballat molt la meva presència en línia, les meves xarxes socials i fins i tot la meva pròpia pàgina web, que ja estarà publicada quan això surti (busqueu el meu nom a internet i la trobareu! :)).

I el més important de tot és que realment he conegut l’escena creativa de Barcelona, i això em fa moltíssima il·lusió.

I només vull donar les gràcies a totes les persones que m’han donat suport des d’on sigui que es trobin; tant si sou a Espanya com a qualsevol altre lloc del planeta, gràcies, perquè heu fet que aquest any sigui especial.

In my last article from April, I talked about my visit to a farm close to Mataró. I was doing research for my very own personal project, and now I have been able to finish it! Since I have a background in futures, I wanted to take this knowledge and connect it with the local people of Terrassa. I have been working on a future version of Calçots (a local variety of spring onions harvested in spring and grilled. It’s a tradition Catalans are obsessed with, and I completely understand why, as they are quite tasty…). During my research, I found out that because of climate change, it will be harder to cultivate them in the future. What I learned on the farm is that the most dangerous conditions to come are mild winters and unpredictable cycles of rain and sun that change very quickly. This makes the crop highly prone to diseases and pests.

So, my project consists of a story that I showcase in a zine. It’s set in 2046, when traditional agriculture hybridizes into hyper-resilient flora, and the Calçotada evolves into a new type of feast. My work navigates complex emotions, shifting perspectives between the bitterness of mourning a lost paradise and the joy of a community thriving even in a harsher reality. I want to inspire locals to reflect on their current habits and actively imagine what they actually want this place to look like in the future. Because climate change is inevitable now, we have to find ways to adapt and live as sustainably as possible.

I presented this project at the Fira del Medi Ambient in Terrassa, and I have to say it was so much fun! I met a lot of interesting people there, and everyone was very excited about my project. It is noticeable that people are more interested in hearing about the future when it concerns them directly, which I achieved by connecting speculative design to local traditions. So many people were eager to read the story, so we published it on the website of La Víbria: go check it out!

Since I’m leaving in a month and starting to say my goodbyes, I’m beginning to reflect on what I’ve learned this year. For me, it was important to grow as a designer, and I think I achieved that. I learned things I hadn’t even thought about before. I also learned how to truly design in a human-centered way through my work at La Víbria. It’s amazing to see the impact your work can have when you design for people and a good cause. Networking was something I definitely improved and enjoyed; I learned how to put myself out there and truly connect with people beyond the surface level. During my free time here, I worked a lot on my online presence, my socials, and even my own website, which will be live by the time this is published (look up my name online, you will find it! :)). And most importantly, I really got to know the creative scene of Barcelona, and I’m really excited about that.

And I just want to say thank you to the people who supported me from wherever they are; whether your are in Spain or any other location on the planet, thank you, you made this year special.
