Senyores i senyors,

Benvolguts lectors,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Fellow readers,

Last month of living through this wonderful and intense experience. Even though I can put it into words, I seem to struggle with realizing that the end is near. Well, that may sound a bit dramatic. The end of the experience at least. I am writing this last diary before going to Barcelona with my friends to celebrate San Joan at the beach.

You can understand that the experience is close to an end if your “to do list” is mostly checked, and only a few of the things you wrote down remain to be ticked. In this case, speaking about big events that take place here, only Festa Major de Terrassa remains, which takes place in the last week of my volunteering.

As I am reading my last diary, I realize that some months ago I struggled a lot, but since then I think I am managing things way better than before. These last few months, I have done way more than I could have ever imagined. I experienced local traditions in Terrassa, but also in other places.

I experienced the amazing San Jordi tradition in Barcelona with some friends, where we exchanged flowers and I received a lovely book by Fede. On the 1st of May, I thought I was living in a fever dream. Along with some volunteers, we went to San Llorenç de Savall and experienced the Pi de Maig, a local tradition where you cut down a pine tree, carry it to the main square, and then all the people collaborate in order to lift it up and place it in the middle of the square until the end of the month. Afterwards, there was paella and bingo with strangers. One of the craziest things I had seen and done.

Moreover, I couldn’t refrain from referring to Feria Modernista even if I wanted to. A must-see festival in Terrassa, with beautiful costumes, activities, and food.

These last months, I also had the opportunity to be closer to nature, as we did a lot of camping and sightseeing near the beach, visiting places like Blanes, Tossa de Mar, Calella de Palafrugell, Empuriabrava, and Cadaqués. The last one may be my favourite. I fell in love with its beautiful houses, the crystal-clear waters, and its charming small roads.

One of the highlights of these months was for sure the Cabrórock festival in Vic, where we saw bands and singers from all over Catalunya, like Oques Grasses, Tyets, and many more. I felt closer to Catalan culture, I screamed from the top of my lungs and butchered the lyrics of many famous Catalan songs, but I can say that I really enjoyed it. Of course, the company always plays the most important part in these events, and I couldn’t be happier to share it with the “superestrellas”, riding a mechanical bull with a fuet in one hand and trying not to fall with the other.

Finally, last week the event that Greta, Fede, Núria, and I had been organizing for some months took place, and I couldn’t be happier. Of course, it was a bit overwhelming until everything was set in place, but it finally went even better than I could have imagined. Activities, music, friends who came to support us, and many people gathered in the public square. We really felt that there was a small impact on the community. I mean, who would have thought? Three random volunteers from abroad organizing a mental health event in Terrassa. Moreover, I couldn’t comprehend that me, a person with a big fear of exposure, I would be speaking in a local radio station along with other volunteers in Spanish!

When it comes to the volunteering itself, I feel like now that I am able to reflect a little better, I have come closer to the people with whom we have been doing activities. Since I jumped the obstacle of speaking more in Spanish, I have had deeper conversations with them. I know their likes, their dislikes, our running jokes, and I really feel part of the team.

He descobert moltes coses sobre mi mateixa durant aquests 10 mesos.

Sometimes I catch myself already feeling this sense of nostalgia even though I am still here. I already imagine myself back home, sitting in my room in Greece and missing all this, like a long-lost dream that never happened, because I know that my reality there will be very different. A really fast change in my routine, the people around me, but also the shift that has happened inside of me, the new me.

I am feeling a little sad but also excited. It’s a rollercoaster, really. However, I do not consider myself pessimistic or a person who takes everything for granted. I want to express how grateful I am to have lived—and still be living—this experience: the people, the friends I made along the way, the new culture that I was introduced to, all the good and the bad.

I have discovered a lot about myself during these 10 months. I have lost and found myself, developed new skills, and cultivated some that I already had but that were a little rusty. Also, on many occasions, I came out of my shell, had to take responsibility, expose myself, and confront all the things that were bothering me.

When I am experiencing a really beautiful moment, I try to take a “mind photo” so I can feel it more deeply and pay more attention to the little things: the colour of the sky, how the sun hits the buildings, strangers passing by, my friends laughing after cracking a joke. It sounds a bit sentimental, because it is. But I do not want to grieve these moments just yet.

I am still here, and there is one month left. I want to be present. And for that, in order to have no regrets, I have made a list of the things that I haven’t done yet, either alone or with other people, in order to fulfil this hungry feeling.

Even so, I am not quite sure yet if this is the end for me in Catalunya. I can already imagine myself coming back here in the near future. Who knows what the future holds? I just know I am going to make the most of it.
